Brick cladding for exterior walls
Exterior brick cladding for elevations, towers and boundary walls
Outside, a wall takes sun, monsoon rain and road dust for decades. Fired clay handles all three. This guide covers where exterior brick cladding works, which tiles hold up best, and the fixing details that decide how long it lasts.
Placement
Where exterior brick cladding works
Most good fronts do not clad everything. They pick the parts of the building that carry its shape and leave the rest calm.
Panels between plaster bands
Brick fills the wall between cream slab bands and window surrounds. The plaster frames the brick and keeps the front from looking heavy.
A tower or a single strip
Clad the staircase tower or one vertical strip and leave the rest in plaster. It costs a fraction of a full front and gives the house a clear brick character.
Full façades
Large institutional and office blocks clad edge to edge, with windows set in plain reveals. Here the 9×3 size goes up fastest.
Vertical bands on towers
On high-rise housing, brick bands between the balcony stacks break up a tall plain wall and mark each flat.
- Boundary walls and gate pillars, often in a darker tile than the house.
- The ground floor only, with plaster above, on a tight budget.
- Balcony back walls on apartments, where weight matters.
- Shop fronts and showroom fascias.
Choosing tiles
Brick cladding for exterior walls: which tile
Any of our tiles can go outside. These four are the ones we suggest most often for fronts and boundary walls.
Road-facing walls
Dust settles into a light joint and onto a bright tile first. A brown or deep red tile with a mid-grey joint looks clean for longer. Rough Brown Texture is the most forgiving.
Walls that catch low sun
East and west faces get raking light in the morning and evening. That is where textured tiles earn their place, because every ripple throws a shadow.
Modern, flat fronts
For a front with big glass and thin slabs, the smooth series in brown or the slim 9×1.5 red keeps the lines clean.
Large areas
On a full façade the 9×3 size covers about 4.5 tiles per square foot against 8 for the slim tile, so it is quicker and cheaper to lay.

Fixing
Fixing brick cladding on outside walls
The tile rarely fails outdoors. The bond behind it does, when water gets in and has nowhere to go. A few details make the difference.
- Exterior-grade adhesive. Use a polymer-modified cement adhesive rated for exterior walls, not plain cement slurry.
- No hollow spots. Back-butter each tile and press it into a full bed. Hollows behind a tile hold water.
- Packed joints. Fill the joints completely and strike them so water runs off the face.
- Protect the top edge. Where cladding ends under a parapet or sill, the top must be covered by a coping or drip so rain does not run behind the tiles.
- Respect slab lines. Where the frame may move, at slab levels or where two materials meet, leave a flexible sealant joint rather than a rigid grout line.
- Breathable sealer. Once the joints have cured, a silicone-based water repellent reduces water uptake without trapping moisture.
Upkeep
Looking after exterior brick cladding
Clay does not need paint, so upkeep is mostly washing. Once or twice a year, brush the wall down with plain water and a soft brush, working from the top.
A white, powdery bloom sometimes appears in the first months, usually after rain. This is efflorescence: soluble salts carried out of the wall, joints or adhesive as they dry. Brush it off dry; it usually fades as the wall settles. If it keeps coming back, look for a water source behind the tiles before treating the surface.
Avoid strong acid cleaners and high-pressure jets close to the joints. If a cleaner is needed, test it on a small patch first and rinse well.

Is brick cladding for exterior walls waterproof?
Fired clay absorbs some water, like any brick. A well-fixed wall with packed joints and a breathable water repellent sheds rain well. Cladding does not fix a leaking wall, so repair cracks and damp before tiling.
Does exterior brick cladding fade?
The colour comes from the clay and the firing, not a coating, so it does not peel the way paint does. Walls can darken with dirt over the years; a wash with water and a soft brush brings them back.
Can brick cladding be fixed on a high building?
Thin clay tiles are fixed on multi-storey façades. On tall buildings, follow the adhesive manufacturer’s specification for exterior and height, and have the work done by an experienced façade team.
