Thin brick cladding tiles for walls: how many per sq ft, and why the joint matters
Most quantity mistakes on cladding jobs come from one thing: counting tiles as if they sat edge to edge. They do not. Every tile has a joint around it, and that joint takes up a real share of the wall.
The formula
One square foot is 304.8 mm × 304.8 mm, or 92,903 mm². To find how many tiles cover it, add the joint width to the tile length and height, multiply, and divide:
tiles per sq ft = 92,903 ÷ ((tile length + joint) × (tile height + joint)), with everything in millimetres.
A 9×3 inch tile is 228.6 × 76.2 mm. With a 10 mm joint that becomes 238.6 × 86.2 mm, or 20,567 mm² per tile. 92,903 ÷ 20,567 = 4.52 tiles per square foot.
Tiles per sq ft for each size
| Tile (inches) | 8 mm joint | 10 mm joint | 12 mm joint |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 × 3 | 4.66 | 4.52 | 4.38 |
| 9 × 2 | 6.68 | 6.40 | 6.15 |
| 9 × 1.5 | 8.52 | 8.09 | 7.71 |
| 6 × 3 | 6.88 | 6.64 | 6.41 |
These are nominal sizes. Fired clay moves a little in the kiln, so treat the figures as a planning number and confirm the final count with us before ordering.
Why joint width matters
It changes the count
On slim tiles the joint is a bigger share of each course. Going from an 8 mm to a 12 mm joint on 9×1.5 tiles cuts the count by roughly 9 percent. On a 500 sq ft wall that is over 350 tiles.
It changes the look
Narrow joints make the wall read as one surface. Wider joints make each brick stand out and suit handmade tiles with soft edges. Pick the joint before you order, not on site.
Wastage
Add about 5 percent on a plain rectangular wall. Add up to 10 percent where there are many windows, corners, pillars or angled cuts. Keep a few spare tiles from the same batch in case one needs replacing later.
A worked example
A living room wall is 12 ft wide and 10 ft high, with no openings: 120 sq ft. Using 9×2 tiles with a 10 mm joint: 120 × 6.40 = 768 tiles. Add 5 percent: 806, so order about 810.
The quantity calculator on our price page does this for any wall and lets you subtract doors and windows.
